A petition has been started calling for online auctioneers to suspend the sale of a Banksy artwork removed from Turnpike Lane.
The Haringey Labour Group launched the petition today after the graffiti, called Bunting Boy, was removed from the side of Poundland in Whymark Avenue.
The work has been put on US Fine Art Auctions Miami website with a starting price of $400,000, equivalent to more than £250,000.
The online petition says: “The unique and iconic Banksy mural taken from Wood Green was given to the community and should remain in the community.
“It should not be sold off privately for the profit of one individual and we urge those responsible to reconsider their decision. We call on Fine Art Auctions Miami to suspend the auction.”
Artist James Straffon, of Langham Road, and leader of Turnpike Art Group (TAG) said: “It’s really sad it's gone and like most people I’m really shocked it’s been taken down.
“Public art can really galvanise a community and make people proud of their area. A lot of people are angry about this being taken and it’s something the whole community shared.
“When it went up it really gave somthing to Turnpike Lane. It was an asset for the community and added to the culture and soul of the area.
“It created a bit of a buzz and Turnpike Lane became a bit of a micro tourist destination for people wanting to see a Banksy. I think it’s a bit of a loss for the area.”
