A children’s wrestling team that has trained athletes who have gone on to compete in the Olympics has won five medals at an international competition.

The Haringey Wrestling Club, based in Bruce Grove, Tottenham, celebrated another successful year at the Aspull International Wrestling Competition in Wigan on Saturday.

The winning wrestlers, who are aged between five and 14, took home two gold medals, two silver and one bronze.

Makasi Tshikeva, the team’s head coach, said he was proud of what the children have achieved and hoped that club would continue to grow.

He said: “Last year we had one of our members go on to join Team GB for the Olympics which set the bar high for us.

“We are very happy with how we did at the weekend and we hope to bring more kids into the club and hopefully have more of them in the next Olympic team.”

The wrestling club has been running since 1995 and in 2004 a member of the club was crowned champion at the Junior Olympics in Estonia.

Since then Haringey Borough Council has allowed to club to use its facilities to train members for free.

It is currently looking for a sponsor so it can afford to buy new training equipment and take on more members.
