Four schools in Enfield might soon no longer have their ‘outstanding’ status after the education watchdog decided to scrap single-word ratings.

Ofsted’s four headline ratings - outstanding, good, requires improvement and inadequate – will no longer be used, the Government announced earlier this week.

It comes after the suicide of primary school headteacher Ruth Perry last year, which took place after a critical inspection by the education watchdog.

Ofsted will continue to inspect schools against the same standards, but will now only issue gradings related to individual aspects of a school's performance.

Around 500 schools in England achieved the top rating of ‘outstanding’ at their last inspection.

This includes four secondary schools in Enfield borough – two in Ponders End, one in Grange Park and one in Palmers Green.

Two of these schools – Waverley School in The Ride, and West Lea School in Haselbury Road – are special schools.

Only two of these schools have been rated in the last two years – West Lea School and St Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls in Oakthorpe Road.

Here is a list of all schools in Enfield that are rated outstanding, and the date of their last inspection.

  • Highlands School in Worlds End Lane – March 7, 2014
  • St Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls in Oakthorpe Road – November 23, 2022
  • Waverley School in The Ride – March 13, 2019
  • West Lea School in Haselbury Road, May 11, 2023
