BAILIFFS are being called in to confiscate goods worth £907 from an Enfield woman who refused to pay a fine for dropping a cigarette butt in Wood Green.

Kristina Djemal, of Charmwood Road, Enfield, was caught by a Haringey Council enforcement officer carelessly tossing her fag end in the streets in August.

She was handed a £75 fine but despite numerous letters she refused to pay the fine and the case ended up in court on December 1 where she failed to attend.

Councillor Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "People seem to think it's ok to drop cigarette butts in the street. Well it's not ok. It costs the council a lot of money to sweep up this litter and I hope this fine will make people think twice before throwing a butt away in future."

A collection order has since been granted by Tottenham Magistrates Court allowing bailiffs to claim the £525 fine and costs of £382.
